2012 Honda Civic
Honda is doing its usual stellar job keeping a secret, so details of the redesigned 2012 Civic are sketchy. It’s certain to retain four-door sedan and two-door coupe body styles. Hatchback versions are offered in Europe and Asia, but that body style sells poorly in the U.S. There’s an outside chance Honda would expand the line to include a small crossover-type wagon, but not before model-year 2013 or so. Exterior dimensions of the U.S.-market 2012 Honda Civics won’t be much different from the 2006-2011 generation. That means the return of a sedan and a slightly smaller coupe. Neither will be particularly large on the outside compared to other compact cars but both should again have as much or more interior space than any rival. Interior volume could in fact expand via marginally elevated ceilings that promote more upright seating and additional head room. Honda, however, would have to balance that against its stylists’ desire for low the rooflines that contribute to Civic’s sporty profile. Indeed, Honda has established Civic as the most futuristic-looking car in the compact class. Civics designed for overseas sales are even more adventurously styled than U.S.-market models, but their daring lines aren’t apt to translate well here. Still, it’s a good bet the 2012 Honda Civic coupe will continue with more aggressive sheetmetal than the sedan, a look befitting its younger buyer demographics. The 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid will be Honda’s principal Toyota Prius-fighter. It’s a better match in size and price than the pure-hybrid Honda Insight. Honda hasn’t previously styled the Civic Hybrid to differentiate it drastically from conventional-powertrain Civics, but it could give the 2012 Civic Hybrid more visual distinction to better battle the space-pod Prius.
